Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp
SUMMER MINISTRY POSITIONS - 2009
Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp hires approximately forty staff members
for various ministry opportunities, including Residential Programming,
backpacking with High Wilderness, service trips with Four Winds,
and community outreach with Traveling Day Camp. Please be aware
of the various age requirements associated with different positions.
IN GENERAL, ALL MINISTRY POSITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO ASSIST
WITH OPERATIONAL TASKS OF THE L DOUBLE R MINISTRIES, AS NEEDED,
IN ADDITION TO REGULAR DUTIES. WHEN ENTERING INTO EMPLOYMENT, IT
IS ASSUMED THAT YOU MAY BE ROTATED TO OTHER PROGRAMS, AS NEEDED.
ROTATING COUNSELORS
COUNSELORS Must be able to work with youth of all
ages and be out of high school at least one year. Rotating counselors
will be trained for and weekly rotated between onsite residential
programs, traveling day camp, and support staff positions.
Residential programs are based
at Sky Ranch and involve responsibility for up to eleven campers
during weekly camp sessions. Responsibilities include leading daily
worship and small group Bible study, day hikes, games, arts activities,
peace and justice activities, and providing for the care and safety
of campers.
Traveling day camp teams work in congregations throughout Utah,
Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado to conduct weeklong programs.
Responsibilities include working with Traveling Day Camp travel
program, Environmental Education and Adventure-based programs. You
will be leading daily Bible study and worship, games, arts activities,
and providing for the care and safety of campers.
Resource Staff includes working in the kitchen or as a ranch hand.
Kitchen Staff are responsible for planning and preparing meals each
week for 100-200 campers. Ranch Hands are responsible for working
with maintenance, recycling, cleaning and housekeeping, camp store
management, laundry, and other tasks necessary for the safe and
efficient operation of the camps.
Rotating Counselors must be a minimum of
19 years of age. Approximately 14 Rotating Counselors are hired.

OFFSITE GUIDES
Offsite Guides Must be able to work well with high
school youth and adults. Must be skilled in wilderness camping and
be in excellent physical condition for backpacking and have been
out of high school at least one year. Two-thirds of the offsite
guides are to be at least 21 years of age. Offsite Guides will
be weekly rotated between high wilderness trips and four winds service
trips.
High Wilderness Trips are weeklong backpacking
trips in the mountains surrounding Sky Ranch. Guides co-lead backpack
groups and teach low-impact wilderness camping skills, environmental
stewardship, wilderness safety, map and compass use, etc. Guides
will also serve as day hike guides and provide backpacking elective
options for onsite participants. Additional responsibilities include
leading daily Bible study and worship, small group discussions,
peace and justice education, and care and safety of campers.
Four Winds Service Trips are weeklong service opportunities
for high school youth. Four Winds Trips are held at Sky Ranch, on
trail (working with the forest service with an Adopt-A-Trail program),
at Harvest Farms in Wellington , CO (Harvest Farms is run by the
Denver Rescue Mission and is for men battling addiction), and an
Urban Plunge in Denver, CO (run in coordination with the Urban Servant
Core). For all of these trips, guides will integrate the service
experience with the summer theme and the Bible Study. Responsibilities
include worship, small group discussion, peace and justice education,
and care and safety of campers.
Offsite Guides may be rotated to other programs.
Must be a minimum of 19 years old. Approximately 8 Offsite Guides
are hired.

RESOURCE STAFF
SKY RANCH KITCHEN STAFF Must be experienced in
menu planning and food preparation for groups. Responsible for planning
and preparing meals each week for 100-200 campers, preparing international
and vegetarian menu items, working with program staff on special
meals, and assisting High Wilderness guides with backpack meal planning.
Must follow state and county safety and sanitation codes. Position
works closely with the Food Service Director. Kitchen Staff
must be a minimum of 17 years old. Approximately 4 Kitchen Staff
are hired.
RANCH HANDS Must be able to do physical work as
well as assist with program activities as needed. Responsibilities
include working with maintenance, recycling, cleaning and housekeeping,
camp store management, laundry, and other tasks necessary for the
safe and efficient operation of the camps. Ranch Hands must
be a minimum of 17 years old. Approximately 2 ranch hands
are hired.

PROGRAM SPECIALISTS
PROGRAM SPECIALISTS are staff
members who provide elective programming for onsite participants,
as well as, any other guests of the ranch. Responsibilities include
developing elective options specific to specialty area and in line
with the mission and vision of L Double R, developing Bible Study
relevant to elective options, and assisting in the implementation
of overall ranch programming. Specialists must be able to work with
people of all ages and abilities. All specialist staff must
be a minimum of 18 years old. Positions include:
CREATIVE ARTS SPECIALIST
Must have experience and skills with creative arts and crafts activities.
Responsibilities include organizing all crafts materials and equipment,
planning and leading the arts and crafts program for ranch and family
campers, and contributing to the stock of liturgical art used for
ranch worship. One Creative Arts Specialist is hired.
ADVENTURE BASED LEARNING SPECIALIST Must have documented
experience and certification in high ropes course facilitation.
In coordination with the ABL coordinator, responsibilities include
directing and maintaining a safe high challenge course ministry
consistent with the mission of L Double R, maintaining and repairing
course elements, modeling effective educational process, and ensuring
the care and safety of participants. One ABL Specialist is hired.
CREATION EDUCATION SPECIALIST Must have background
in environmental education, stewardship, and wilderness issues,
and must create and provide curriculum and activities that reflect
care for creation and encourage responsible and faithful Christian
lifestyles. Responsibilities include coordinating environmental
programming with all ministry programs at L Double R, assisting
with staff training, developing, and maintaining the nature center,
and encouraging environmentally sound practices in all aspects of
the camp operation and programming. One Creation Education Specialist
is hired.
FOOD EDUCATION SPECIALIST Must have an awareness
of issues related to food production, distribution, and consumption.
Responsibilities include cultivating and maintaining a small greenhouse
with produce to be used within elective opportunities, (along with
the creation education specialist) implementing an effective composting
program, and encouraging sound food-related practices in all aspects
of the camp operation and programming. One Food Education Specialist
is hired.
PIONEER HISTORY SPECIALIST Must have background
in outdoor survival skills and an awareness of local history. Responsibilities
include maintaining an authentic chuckwagon eating experience, developing
programs that educate participants on the history of settlement
and teaches responsible care of the environment, and overseeing
the implementation of the archery program. The Pioneer History Specialist
will work closely with the Homesteaders program, including coordinating
an overnight experience at Beaver Flats. One Pioneer History
Specialist is hired.
WORSHIP AND MUSIC SPECIALIST Must have experience
in Lutheran expressions of worship. Responsibilities include helping
to develop theme specific worship experiences that will be used
throughout the summer, coordinating staff to assist with various
worship experiences each day, and assisting counselors with the
planning and implementation of camper lead worship experiences.
The worship and music specialist will also facilitate a daily bible
study for adult sponsors. One Worship and Music Specialist is
hired.
RANCH HAND SPECIALIST Must have a background and
experience in general maintenance and be able to do physical work.
Responsibilities include working closely with the Maintenance Director
to complete tasks around camp, coordinating projects for volunteer
groups (including Cabins, Rendezvous, Blisters and Blue Jeans, and
adult sponsors), and organizing and maintaining adopt-a-trail shed.
One Ranch Hand Specialist is hired.

PROGRAM COORDINATORS
COMMUNITY COORDINATOR Must be experienced in education,
teaching, or working with children. Responsibilities include working
closely with the Community Director in the implementation of onsite
programming, as well as, coordinating all aspects of the Traveling
Day Camp programs at assigned congregations, leading program activities,
coordinating and supporting efforts of TDC Counselors, working with
congregational contacts, communicating with the Summer Camp Director
and the Community Director on a regular basis, and ensuring the
care and safety of campers. Workweek starts on Thursday
and ends on Tuesday. Must be a minimum of 21 years
of age. One Community Coordinator is hired.
OUTPOST COORDINATOR Must have expertise in backpacking,
low-impact camping, wilderness safety and environmental issues,
understand and work within U.S. Forest Service regulations. Responsibilities
include working closely with the Offsite Director in the implementation
of offsite programming, as well as, helping to direct main site
day hikes, assisting with staff training, making staff assignments,
coordinating and supporting efforts of the High Wilderness staff,
meal planning, equipment maintenance, and repair, maintaining trail
use records, organizing the Backpack Center and ensuring the care
and safety of campers. Workweek starts on Thursday and ends
on Tuesday. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age. One
Outpost Coordinator is hired.
ADVENTURE BASED LEARNING COORDINATOR Must be experienced
in education, teaching or working with children, and have documented
experience and certification in high ropes course facilitation.
Responsibilities include coordinating specialist ministries, developing
ABL programs, directing and maintaining a safe high challenge course
ministry consistent with the mission of L Double R, maintaining
and repairing course elements, modeling effective educational processes,
and ensuring the care and safety of participants. Must be able to
work with people of all ages and abilities. Must be a minimum
of 21 years of age. One ABL Coordinator is hired.
LEADERSHIP COORDINATOR Must be experience in education,
teaching, or working with children, as well as leadership in a congregational
setting. Responsibilities include developing and implementing all
leadership programming (YouthGo!, SIT, and Non-New Orleans Gathering),
assisting with staff training, and ensuring the care and safety
of all campers. Must be a minimum of 21 years old. One Leadership
Coordinator is hired.
SKY RANCH OFFICE MANAGER Responsibilities include
management of site office, cleaning, assisting with general office
tasks, answering the telephone, receiving camper and staff Email
and mail, assisting with camper registration and hospitality. Office
Manager also oversees weekend programming, and as such is responsible
for hosting weekend groups and family campers during the week, supervision
of the camp ground and lodge facilities, hospitality, and ensuring
the care and safety of campers. Position includes responsibility
of being main contact person on-site during the weekend. Workweek
starts on Thursday and ends on Tuesday. Must be a minimum
of 21 years old. One Office Manager is hired.

SKY RANCH COMMUNITY DIRECTOR: Must be experienced
in outdoor ministry programming, staff management, and peace and
justice education. Responsibilities include directing all aspects
of the main site ministry of Sky Ranch, implementing safe and effective
programming, assisting with staff training, conducting staff meetings,
coordinating and supporting efforts of the Ranch staff, implementing
emergency procedures and risk management plans, maintaining records,
making staff program assignments, nurturing counselors and support
staff as a ministry team, and ensuring the care and safety of the
community. Must be a minimum of 23 years old. One Sky Ranch
Community Director is hired.
OFFSITE DIRECTOR: Must be experienced
in outdoor ministry programming, staff management, and peace and
justice education, as well as have expertise in backpacking, low-impact
camping, wilderness safety and environmental issues, understand,
work within U.S. Forest Service regulations and be comfortable leading
groups in coordination with outside agencies. Responsibilities include
directing all aspects of the High Wilderness and Four Winds ministries,
implementing safe and effective programming, assisting with staff
training, conducting staff meetings, coordinating and supporting
efforts of the Ranch staff, implementing emergency procedures and
risk management plans, maintaining records, making staff program
assignments, nurturing counselors and support staff as a ministry
team, and ensuring the care and safety of the community. Must
be a minimum of 23 years old. One Offsite Director is hired.
FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR: Must
be experienced in menu planning, safe food preparation for groups
and supervision of kitchen staff. Responsibilities include directing
both L Double R and Sleepy Owl Ranch Food Services, planning all
meals, directing meal preparation, scheduling cooks, maintaining
a clean and safe kitchen and dining area, ordering food, keeping
accurate records of meals and expenses, being open to multicultural
and vegetarian meal preparation, and assisting High Wilderness guides
with meal planning. Must be able to train, manage and support a
staff of about 5 cooks. Workweek starts on Thursday and
ends on Tuesday. One Food Service Director is hired.
