History of Square Dusters Club

In the mid 1950's square dancing was going through a renaissance and began to be of interest to more and more people. A group of workers at Woodward Governor Co, here in Ft.Collins, began to square dance among themselves, and soon had a small private group of square dancers. They danced in a small company warehouse at lunch time or other off work hours. But, as is always the case, there was a party pooper in the form of one of the company higher-ups who did not appreciate workers dancing on company property. Suddenly, they had no place to dance. But the activity provided so much in the way of social fun, no one wanted to end it then and there. No one can recall the exact year all of this occurred but it was after the company relocated to the new plant at Lemay and Drake in the early 1960's.

In order to continue dancing, it was necessary to find a place in town, which could be rented. Eventually someone found that the City Park Recreation building was available and it required some clean up. which the members themselves managed to do. But the costs of dancing in a rented building made it a priority to increase membership in order to spread the costs over a wider member base. So, the word was passed around the area and one by one, they gained new members. A name was needed for the club, and thus the Square Dusters square dance club came into being. The first club caller was Jim Vitch. In the mid 1960's Ray Boyd became the caller and called for many years. He is now one of Square Dusters charter members. The club flourished and over the years Square Dusters and square dancing evolved as we know it today.
