Upcoming 2011 Meetings:
September - September 22nd, from 7-9pm at Copoco's Honey, 2020 N. College Ave. Fort Collins 80524. This party will be a blast! We will have a photo contest, a honey tasting contest, a number of door prizes, a four course dinner, an award ceremony and so much more! A documentary crew will also be present.
October - Our October meeting is planed for the 11th at the Council Tree Library, in Fort Collins. from 6:30- 8:30pm. This will be our annual election of officers. Please plan to come to this meeting and place your vote for your next officers, and please consider over the next few months if you can participate and become on officer. Map

Our April Meeting is Scheduled for April 11th at the Greeley Recreation Center. Former NCBA President and current Colorado State Beekeepers Association President Beth Conrey will speak on swarm collection and hive removal. She also maintains our swarm hotline and list of swarm catchers and hive removers.
Our May Meeting is scheduled for the 10th at CSU for a bee dissection lab with Chris Mayack, Time will be 7-9 PM in rooms E101 and E103 of the CSU Zoology building. Topic will be how to dissect a honeybee and how to detect nosema. Parking permits are not required after 4 pm on the CSU campus. Click here for map.
JUNE - For our June meeting we will have our annual Meet and Greet, It will be held on the 14th at the Syntax Distillery in Greeley, located at 625 3rd Street, Unit C at 7pm - 9pm. This will be a great opportunity for all our members, volunteers, officers and Mentors/Mentees to get a chance to meet each other if you haven't yet. It is also a good meeting to invite any of your friends that have been thinking about joining the Association or starting beekeeping. Map
July - Our July meeting will be held on the 19th in Berthoud at the Community Center at 248 Welch Ave, from 7pm - 9pm. We will be hearing from Andre Houssney from Zambeezi organic lib balm. Here is an excerpt from their website "You’d have to go deep into the forests of central Africa to find a region wild and pure enough to produce organic beeswax. And that’s where you’d find us hard at work creating Zambeezi, made with wild harvested mungongo, an edible nut long used by the local Zambians as a moisturizer. With precious organic essences, Zambeezi is a luscious lip balm with a wild gingery lemongrass flavor." I am sure that his presentation will be a lot of fun. August - Our August Meeting is planed for the the 9th at 7pm - 9pm at the PVREA Building in Windsor. This will be our Annual extractor meeting. January 2010 - will be held at the Berthoud Community Center from 6:30 to 8:30 on Thursday, January 21st and will feature Chad Ragland, a beekeeper and owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Grand Junction. He will be talking about growing your bee business into a successful enterprise. A discussion on how NCBA can assist you in developing your business will follow. Our February meeting will feature Mike Doyle with the Center for Disease Control. He will be speaking on mosquito spraying efforts in the area. Thank you to Carolina Nyardy for capturing a swarm near Mike and engaging him in the conversation that lead to this presentation. The February meeting will be held at the Loveland Public Library, Gertrude Scott room, on Tuesday, February 16th from 6:30 to30. Of course, we will need food for this meeting, too. March brings a collaborative effort between all of the Front Range Beekeeping organizations to fruition with the arrival of author and researcher, Diana Sammataro, to the area. Her presentation will be in the afternoon on Saturday, March 6th for the Northern bee associations and on Thursday, March 4th for the Denver clubs. Details on venue and time will be made available as soon as I hear. Mark your calendars now!
Our March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Harmony library in Fort Collins. It will feature Dr. Jeffrey Morisette with the USGS. The April meeting is also scheduled for the Johnstown Senior Center on Wednesday, April 14th from 7-9 pm. Note our shift to summer hours! It will feature Ed Smelko, who kindly volunteered, on swarm management and Kris Holthaus and Estel Schultis on making splits. I will begin compiling the swarm hotline at this meeting, too. This is a VERY TIMELY subject! Snacks are covered for this meeting, also.
May BEE LAB: Wednesday, May 19th from 7-9 pm at rooms E101 and E103 of the CSU Zoology building. we will do something really novel. Chris Mayack, with CSU, has procured two of CSU's biology teaching labs for a meeting on how to dissect a honeybee and how to detect nosema. He is working in conjunction with members Patrick and Sam Miller and Linda McWilliams. It will be held on We do not need parking permits after 4 pm on the CSU campus. Click here for map.
June 8th, Tuesday, from 7 to 9 pm. We are quite far behind on a few things so I will be having a meeting in June, also. I am not sure of the venue but I do know the agenda and the date. It will be a presentation on the results of the NCBA Colony Loss survey and the opportunity (which each and every one of you should exercise) to get your hives on the Google Earth Hive Map which is distributed to the applicators as well as the mosquito control folks. In addition, Sarah Rowland, who is an encaustic painter will be speaking. Encaustic painters make paint out of beeswax--in Sarah's case--John Pohly's beeswax. She bought some of his beeswax and submitted her paintings to the University of Arizona. As a result, she was accepted into their Master of Fine Arts program. I will schedule the venue as soon as I hear from our guest speaker.
June 17th, Thursday, from 7 to 9 pm. Our second annual "Meet and Greet" will be held at the Berthoud Town Park This is simply a get together for new members to meet existing members; mentees to meet mentors, etc. No business meeting will be held--this is strictly a social affair. We will serve appetizers, desserts, beer and wine. I am in need of some folks to help with food preparation, setup and tear down. If you can help, please let me know. Click here for map
The July meeting will be held at the Gardens on Spring Creek on Tuesday, the 13th, from 7-9 pm. A map is attached. The meeting will feature Tom Theobald speaking on pesticides and bees. On July 16th, Kim Flottum, Editor of Bee Culture will be speaking at the Highland Masonic Lodge at 3550 Federal at 7:00 pm. This is where Diana Sammataro spoke earlier this year.
The August meeting will be held at the Poudre Valley REA building, in Windsor. It will be held on Wednesday, August 18, from 7-9 pm and will be our annual meeting on how to check out, use, and return the extractor. We will also go over the proper use of the uncapping knife and the refractometer. In addition, we will have a discussion on honey pricing for the upcoming harvest. And the 3rd ANNUAL HONEY PARTY date has been finalized! This year's party will also feature the second annual photo contest and the first annual awards ceremony! It will be held at Fairgrounds Park in Loveland (same place as last year) on Thursday, September 9th from 6:30 to 9 pm. As always, the family is invited. Details to follow but mark your calendars now! Also, get to preparing those photo entries, too!
In October, we will switch to our winter meeting hours and will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. We have not set the venue nor the date at this time but we would like you all to please remember that this is a very important meeting because it is our annual Election of Officers.
The November meeting will be on Wednesday the 10th in the Aspen room at the Windsor Recreation Center from 6:30- 8:30. The agenda will be a brain-storming session on the future of NCBA. We are in need of someone to provide refreshments (please call Ben if you can help).
November is Mead month and the mead guys are already hard at it and even have a date ready for the Mead Tasting. It will be Saturday, November 20th. Details to follow on times and locations.
The Holiday meeting will be held at the Pulliam Building in Loveland at 545 N Cleveland Ave. 6:30 to 8:30 on Thursday the 2nd of December, we have never met at this location before. The Library in Loveland is under renovation so was unavailable. Be advised that the restrooms at this location are not handicapped accessible.
Like last year we will make this meeting our craft event, so I invite everyone to bring their crafts from beekeeping or otherwise and share with everyone as well as inviting family and friends to attend so there will be more likelihood for sales.
These were our meetings in 2009:
January 2009 Meeting will be held at the Berthoud Community Center on Tuesday, January 13th from 6:30 to 8:30. Featured speaker will be Ed Smelko. He will be discussing the nutritional benefits of the various alternatives for bee foods that have come out on the market in the past year. In addition, we will discuss the pros and cons of various feeder options.
On Saturday, February 7th beginning at noon, there will be a Mead Making Event at Jason Goldman's house at 1900 Ridgewood Rd. John will be hosting a mead brewing event at his home. This will run from noon-3pm or so. For this event, John will be brewing a batch of mead and talking about the process. John is also inviting other homebrewers to this event and is hoping we'll get some others brewing at the same time to show some different alternatives and approaches. Sheron from Foxryde will be helping with this event as well (assuming the schedule works). She's a fine local meadmaker and a fellow instructor, so this should be a great opportunity for the NCBA to learn a lot.

February 17th Windsor Recreation Center, 6:30 to 8:30, Chemical Free Beekeeping presented by Kristal Domenico and Deedee Hosler. Kristal and Deedee attended the Chemical Free Beekeeping conference in Nebraska and will be sharing what they learned from the course.
On March 25th Meeting: Chris Mayack, a CSU graduate student, will be making a presentation on his research regarding Nosema Ceranae. The meeting will be at the Harmony Library from 6:30 to 8:30 and will be the last of our winter hour meetings. We will switch back to 7:00 to 9:00 for the summer season. April 4th - The woodenware workshop will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Loveland from 1-3 pm. As always, we will have stations setup to illustrate basic component construction--frames, boxes, tops and bottoms. In addition, we have 2 workshops set up for advanced beekeepers. First, John Pohly will be demonstrating how to create a pollen substitute feeder from common household stuff (meaning virtually free). Second, David Izaguerre will be conducting a workshop on that cool little bee vac that he invented last year. This bee vac operates on both battery and outlet power and has more flexibility than the larger bee vac that most of us currently use. If you are interested in either of these workshops, please RSVP to Beth ASAP. John will begin at 1 and David will follow at about 1:30 to 1:45.
April 21st Meeting: at the Johnstown Community Center from 7-9 pm. There will be a business meeting and the Committees will all give presentations on their current activities. Swarm season will be right around the corner. Beth will talk about swarm season management and we will begin the sign-up process. If you cannot make the meeting, do not worry, We will let you know the information needed via email.
May NCBA Meeting: The May meeting will be held at the Greeley Recreation Center on Thursday, May 21st from 7-9 pm. Ben and Rebekah Gilmore will be giving a presentation on the California Almond Pollination season this year. Beth Conrey will illustrate the Google Earth Hive Mapping system. The hive mapping system is free and optional and any member may participate. Your hives are mapped and labeled and the information is sent to the local aerial applicators and to the State Dept. of Agriculture. Click here for Map
Meet and Greet: Ever met your mentor? Never met your mentee? Do you have a clue as to who the officers are and don't know what they look like? Then join us in June as we hold our first annual "Meet and Greet". It will be held at the Berthoud Town Park from 6-8 pm on June 3rd. Please consider volunteering for this event and Beth will update you as to volunteer needs as we get closer to the big day!
November is Mead Month and the mead men are back at it with another terrific lineup of mead events. First, on November 7th, John Maday and Jason Goldman will hold the annual Mead Tasting event. It will be held at Jason Goldman's house on November 15th. This class is limited to 10 people. December 2nd - The Council Tree meeting room at the new Council Tree Library in Fort Collins. It is located in southeast Fort Collins at 2733 Council Tree Ave. This is just north of Harmony and just west of Ziegler. Should make it easy for everyone on the east side of the highway to get to a Fort Collins venue! The December meeting date is Wednesday, December 2nd, and will be held from 6:30 to 8:30. A lousy map is attached. Per our discussion at our October meeting, the date is VERY early in the month so, hopefully, more people can make it before the holidays get too hectic. We will have our annual Crafts Fair. If you are interested in selling your bee (and other) crafts at this fair, please contact Beth me ASAP, as there is a limited numbers of tables available. These were our events in 2008
January NCBA meeting - will be held at the Berthoud Area Community Center on January 24th from 7 to 9 pm. The Community Center is located at 238 Welch Avenue in Berthoud. A map is attached (click here). We will be showing the "Silence of the Bees" documentary which aired on Nature last year. It is an excellent film and lasts about an hour. The balance of the time will be used for a film discussion and a brief business meeting.
February NCBA meeting - will be held in the City of Love--in honor of Valentine's Day--at the Loveland Public Library on February 21st from 7 to 9. Program to be determined.
March NCBA meeting - will be held in the Windsor Recreation Center, March 18th, 7-9 PM. Charleen Barr, Larimer Master Gardener and novice beekeeper will be presenting "What's Buzzing in my Garden-- Beneficial Pollinators" in the Aspen Room at the Windsor Recreation Center. This presentation provides an overview of why pollination is important, how plants attract pollinators, behavior of pollinators and their benefits. Beneficial insects, natural controls vs. insecticides, and beautiful gardens conclude this 45 minute talk. Beth Conrey, Master Beekeeper and President of the Northern Colorado Beekeepers will field specific questions on honeybees. This program is free and open to the public. April NCBA meeting - will be at the Harmony Library in Fort Collins, 7-9 PM on April 15th. The Colorado Division of Wildlife will be presenting a "Bear-proof your Hive" session for the first half of the meeting. The second half will be the Google Earth presentation on hive mapping that didn't occur at the last meeting due to technical difficulties.
May NCBA meeting - willl be held at Larimer County Extension Service Office in Fort Collins from on May 15th from 7 - 9 pm. Estel Schultis and Kris Holthaus will be talking about and demonstrating the proper techniques for splitting and Nucs. There will be an update on the Hive Mapping Project and introduction of our new Volunteer Coordinator.
June NCBA meeting - will be held June 18th at the Greeley Recreation Center Room 101C from 7-9 pm. The topic for discussion will be "ReQueening" by Jim Boyd. There will be a swarm update and time available to "Shoot the Bees (instead of Shoot the Breeze)".
July NCBA meeting - will be held July 24th in the Johnstown Community Center, the time will be 7-9 PM and the presentations will be Top Bar Hives by Kristal Domenico and Swarm follow-up reporting
August NCBA meeting - will be held August 26th at the Poudre Valley REA, the time will be 7-9 PM. Edie Stout will be showing off the Club extractor and uncapping knife and letting you know the procedure for borrowing them. We would like to engage in a discussion afterwards and the primary topic will be "Honey Pricing".
September NCBA meeting - will be held at the Berthoud Town Park on September 18th from 6:30 to 8:30 (Note new fall/winter time!). We will have a "Grilling with Honey" BBQ. Families and significant others are invited. RSVP by September 11th.

November is Mead Month at NCBA. Members John Maday and Jason Goldman will be conducting two different mead sessions this month.
Saturday, November 8th, 2-4 pm there will be a Mead Tasting Event at John Maday's house at 7109 Ranger Drive.
We will start with a structured tasting, with three or four different meads. Jason is good at describing how to evaluate aroma and pick out different flavors and characteristics of the drink. So we'll take some time tasting small samples, discussing, comparing and contrasting the different styles, etc.
After that, the session turns completely informal. We just socialize, open whatever other meads are available, sample them, discuss, graze on some snacks.
