Instructions to help you use FTP to put your information on FortNet

See the steps for the other steps.

  1. Creation of your web pages should be complete at this point. You can either create them yourself, or ask to have a volunteer create them for you or use outside contractors. If you are just revising pages that are already up on your web site then use the same FTP(File Transfer Protocall) program to download the page(s) you wish to change.

  2. To get started to FTP you need a computer with Internet access, Browser software, a text editior (Word Pad will do) and an FTP application. If your pages were built using some development software, like Front Page then these instructions may not be of much assistance to you.

  3. If you do not have an FTP program on your PC you will need to buy or download a free version. AOL's browser has built in FTP capability. For more info about AOL see below. A good choice for freeware is LeechFTP which can be found and obtained from CNET. Go to the download page and type in FTP, or LeechFTP, select the version you want and download it.

  4. To access your files on FortNet you will need to know four items of information. 1. Your User Name,(or User ID) it was assigned when your account was first set up. 2. Your password, this was also assigned when your account was set up, but your webmaster may have changed it so your may need to obtain it from him or her. New passwords can be set up but may take several days. 3. The Host site address, which is "www.fortnet.org", although other older addresses still work. 4. The "Initial Remote Directory", this is www/htdocs/[your user name] but if you are using your correct username and password our system will take you directly to your directory.

  5. CuteFTP: The contents of your master directory will appear in the box on the lower right corner of the page. To transfer files from your PC to the directory on the right double click on it. To open any directory double click on it. There is no second chance, so if you overwrite a new file, it's gone.
  6. LeechFTP: After setting up your profile in a Bookmark and entering your directory, drag and drop files from one directory to the other. Use Local & Remote to add and rename files and directories. Visit the Help screen or down load and print instructions if needed.

  7. AOL: AOL has a simple, and therefore easy to use FTP program built into all of their browsers. To access FTP from the AOL main screen: Go To, Key Word, and enter FTP, then click Go. At the new File Transfer Protocol-FTP screen click on the "Go To FTP" icon. (Simple instructions are at the Using FTP window) At the Select a FTP site.... screen; click on the "Other Site" icon. At the Site Address box type in "www.fortnet.org", X the "Ask for login name and password" box and click the "Connect" icon. At the Remote sign-On menu, enter your login name (user name) and your password and click the "Continue" icon. You should then see your files. Use the icons shown to make changes. Refer to the instructions when needed. Experiment carefully your first few times. ---Dave

  8. CSU: To FTP the files from CSU to FortNet do the following.
    A. Log into CSU and get to the Unix command prompt. B. Type "ftp linden.fortnet.org" and login using the FortNet username/password. C. Type "bin" D. Type "mput *.gif" then follow instructions. E. Type "asc" F. Type "mput *.html" the follow instructions. G. Type "quit" That should work for you if you have image files other than gif. Repeat steps 3 and for each image type. You don't need to type the quotes and should press enter after typing the commands that are in quotes. ---Hans

  9. HP please note that although many volunteers that work on our web pages work at HP, the HP security system prevents FTPing from your office. Unless you are really good at using the internet.
  10. Check that your pages pass the WebLint requirement by running WebLint on them. You can also run HTML QA on them. If there are problems, fix them now. If you need help you can get help at the HTML Team meetings or by sending a message to html@fortnet.org(the HTML Team mailing list).
