In 1993, the National Trust for Historic Preservation sponsored
a Preservation Leadership Training Institute in Fort Collins,
bringing together 40 preservation leaders from around the region
to study effective leadership skills and to put their skills
to work on a local preservation project - the Linden Hotel. After
sitting empty for years, the Linden was not only an eyesore but
also a hazard. In addition to developing feasible reuse scenarios
for the Linden, the Institute participants recommended formation
of an activist organization to lead the preservation effort.
Thus Historic Fort Collins was founded to preserve historic buildings
in Fort Collins and return them to economic use, starting with
the Linden.
Not long after Historic Fort Collins was founded, developers
Mitch Veldman and Dave Morgan stepped up to tackle the Linden
Hotel project. While HFCDC did not become a partner in this project,
we did help provide the political support needed to secure grants
from the city and state to make the project possible. Today,
the Linden is fully occupied and one of the keystones of downtown
Fort Collins.
