Mailing Lists
There are more ways to interact with the Internet than surfing the Web.
Mailing Lists
One of the interactive possibilities of FortNet is the mailing list. Majordomo is the mailing list management program FortNet uses.
Mailing lists are a way to correspond via e-mail with people interested in the same kinds of things you are. Hobbies, causes, or situations; there's probably a mailing list out there that deals with it. Once you've subscribed to the mailing list, you'll receive mail messages from other people who belong to that mailing list. You can then join in and post your own messages -- and only the other people who subscribe to the mailing list will see them.
Anyone with e-mail can subscribe to and participate in a mailing list. Additionally, FortNet subscribers can create their own mailing lists. If you're interested in starting your own mailing list, decide on the following:
- What and who is it for? It could be a support group, a special-interest group, hobbyists, sports fans, you name it.
- Do you want the list to be moderated (that is, have someone checking the content of the messages)?
- Do you want the list membership to be open, or do you want new subscribers to be approved before they can join?
You may complete the online application now or E-mail your request to sympa-owner@fortnet.org.
You'll also need to fill out, sign and return a Information Provider's Agreement.
In a couple of days your mailing list will be set up and instructions for running the list
will be e-mailed to you. FortNet's new Mailing List Services starting March 1st, 2003.
