Field Trip Report
Saturday January 27, 2001
Canyon City / Royal Gorge
Nick Komar
Seven people attended this field trip to Fremont County in the upper
Arkansas River valley of southern Colorado. We met at Jim and Rosie Watts'
house in Penrose where about 100 Pinyon Jays were frequenting the feeders.
In Caņon City, we saw Eurasian Collared-Doves Scaled Quail. At Tunnel
Drive, we had a close (20-30ft) and lengthy (3-4 minutes) view of a Rufous-crowned
Sparrow. Also seen there were a Northern Mockingbird and a Greater
Roadrunner. At the Royal Gorge Nature Center, we saw 5 forms of Dark-eyed
Junco and 3 species of Rosy-Finches, including Black (the most common), a
few Brown-capped and Gray-crowned (including several "Hepburns").
Also seen there were Steller's Jay, Western Scrub-Jay, Spotted Towhee,
Juniper Titmouse, Mountain Chickadee, White-crowned Sparrow and Common
Raven. Highlights along the Arkansas Riverwalk in Caņon City included
Cassin's Finch, American Pipit, American Dipper and 12 Common Snipe
feeding together. Although it snowed most of the day, the temp remained in
the upper 20's and there was no wind so it was bearable. Special thanks to
SeEtta Moss for guiding us through Caņon City, David Pantle for warming
us up in his home, and Glenda Schleve for opening the Royal Gorge Nature
Center for us. Leader: Nick Komar, nick.komar@juno.com.
